CHOOSING A SET OF UNIVERSAL SADDLEBAGS

“Universal” or “throw over” saddlebags are designed to fit almost every motorcycle.  They use a ‘yoke’ which sits over the rear fender to form the ‘throw over’ installation.  This yoke generally sits under the passenger seat and is often detachable from the bags so you don’t need to remove the seat to remove the bags.

The size of the saddlebags not only determines how much gear you can carry, but also which size is suitable for your bike.  We don't know the exact measurements of every bike, but there are areas you can measure to decide which size will work for you.

1. The general rule is to measure from your exhaust to between the fender rail and the top of the fender to make sure you have clearance from the exhaust.  This will determine your maximum height.  Don’t forget to allow for suspension travel, loaded bags and general movement.  The yoke is generally adjustable to shorten up the amount of hang, so there might be a small amount of adjustment here.     
2. Measure from your turn signals towards the rear of the drivers seat to determine your maximum length.  Don't cramp your seating position.  In some cases you may need to relocate your turn signals and there are often kits available to make this easier.
3. Depth is the measurement of the bag that determines the overall width of your bike.  This is the one measurement that has more to do with style, look and practicality than absolute measurements. 

The dimensions of each set of saddlebags are in the "specs" area towards the bottom of the product's page.  If you measure the areas you have to work with on your bike you'll be able to compare them and choose a set of saddlebags. 

Whichever bag you choose, it's recommended that you use a saddlebag support frame as well.  This will stop the bags bouncing and swinging by supporting them and having tie off points.  There are bike specific and universal saddle bag supportive kits available to suit.
